Setting up the Qflash T4d digital
Out of the box, the Qflash requires very little assembly. For this lesson, we will focus on setting up the T4d remote of the camera on a light stand.
To provide adjustability to the Qflash on the light stand, we used a Shoe-Mount Multiclamp from Photoflex. This product includes all the attachment hardware we need to position the Qflash where we want. The Multiclamp will provide the ability to tilt the light head while on the light stand.
Once we un-packed our new Qflash unit, we attached a 1/4-20 brass connector stud included in the Multiclamp kit to the threaded hole on the bottom of the unit (figures 1 and 2).
Next, we attached the Multiclamp to the top of our light stand and secured it. Then we inserted the brass stud in the top of the Multiclamp (figures 3 and 4). |
The Qflash is secured into the Multiclamp with the set screw (figure 5).

With the Qflash secure, we can install the flash tube in the unit.
Once you have unwrapped the flash tube, line up the red dot on the Qflash unit with the red dot on the flash tube. Then insert the tube into the T4d, making sure that the tube is well seated (figures 6 and 7). |
The next step is to install the reflector. First loosen the retaining ring on the Qflash unit (figure 8) then insert the reflector onto the Qflash head (figure 9). |

Connecting the 2X2 Turbo battery pack
Now we can attach the 2X2 turbo battery pack to the Qflash unit. First we hung the battery pack on the light stand. Then we removed the plug cover on the turbo battery pack (figure 10). |
Insert the plug from the Qflash cord into the outlet on the 2X2 turbo battery pack (figures 11 and 12). |
Now we can power up the 2X2 turbo unit and get started shooting. Press and hold down the power button on the battery pack until the power/charge indicator lights comes on (figure 13). This set of lights lets you know the power is on and how much of a charge you have in the battery (figure 14). |
Using the FreeWire radio slave units
The FreeWire radio slave allows the camera to sync with the flash by using a radio signal instead of sync cords. One radio unit acts as a transmitter from the camera and the other unit is a receiver to fire the flash unit.
Attach one unit to the light stand with the included strap (figure 15). |

Figure 15 |
Then attach the AC end of the sync cord to the Qflash unit (figure 16). |

Figure 16 |
Now we can switch the unit on and put up the antenna (figures 17 and 18). |
We used this same procedure to set up the transmitter unit to the camera. |
Now we are ready to shoot. For the following examples, we installed a small LiteDome onto a Quantum connector ring, both from Photoflex. We used three light set ups using this soft box and flash combination to shoot a simple portrait as an example of what you can do with this product.
In figure 19, we see the basic three light portrait set up including the “Main Light”, the “Fill Light”, and the “Hair Light” all using the T4d flash units and a small LiteDome. |

Figure 20 is one of the results we got with this lighting set up.
As you can now see, the Quantum T4d Qflash is an easy to use, compact, and versatile flash unit that’s at home in the hottest fashion studios or in the studio in your spare room. |
